South Africa lost 14 soldiers in the eastern DRC conflict in January. Most were part of the SADC mission, but at least two were deployed as part of a separate United Nations peacekeeping mission.

The M23 has continued to gain ground in eastern DR Congo and last month seized the region's second-biggest city, Bukavu.

Southern African heads of state will consider a recommendation to withdraw troops from eastern DRC in the coming days.
